Science experiments happen here on Tuesdays. Today we did Experiment #1 found in Physics Workshop (Thames & Kosmos). I offered The Salamander the option of writing a post in lieu of a written report. He hip-pity, hip-hopped all the way to the computer. It turned out to be a little more work than we thought. Here he is.
First, we built the potato trap. It was 46 centimeters high. Then, we found where the potato would fall using a pendulum, and placed a match in a marker on the spot where the potato would fall. Then, I dropped the first potato.
The match came out of the marker and stuck into the potato.
The Butterfly dropped another potato and the top of the match broke off into the potato.
With the third potato, I moved the marker to the middle and I sharpened the match end and the match stuck into the potato.
One potato was smaller than the others but it didn't make a difference. The match sticks entered the potatoes in equal amounts. A reason for this could be the smaller potato was softer. Also, different people dropped the potatoes.
We would show the pictures of the impaled potatoes but we cannot get them to show up!
Was it potatoes and matchsticks for dinner?

Editors note: Abridged version of science report due to computer user ignorance (me) and is not indicative of bad science.
It will be updated when I the science teacher regains her sanity. Don't hold your breath.
